The Opportunity

The Online Retailers Landscape

While the popularity of shopping local is steadily growing, local shops are predicted to lose $1.6 billion in retail sales to other online retailers and American-owned companies. Reports released by Vanity found that independent retailers in Canada (both large and small) have a poor online presence, making Canada a prime target for foreign e-tailers. There is a growing concern that Canadians will lose interest in shopping local as people are being drawn online more and more.

The Solution

Provide Customized Shopping Experience

By enabling customers to shop from home, The Main Muse strives to drive interest in shopping local, supplement the sales of Main Street shops, and increase community engagement.

1. Stock Availability

Products sold on Main Street are often limited in quantity. Hence, real-time stock availability would benefit customers whether they've decided to shop online or visit in person. Stock information can be easily access upon hover.

2. 3D Virtual Home Decoration

A handy tool for customers to visualize how a product would appear in real-life setting. This helps compensate for the missing positive experience such as feeling the material, or inspecting the size of a product when shopping in person.

3. Easy & Flexible Return Policies

I have designed a flexible policy that minimizes the friction and steps required to return any prducts. Customers can choose from multiple drop-off points including neighbourhood convenience stores, at Amazon locker-type facilities, or Uber Rush - a courier service for deliveries.

A user-friendly ecommerce website should provide users with the information of their concern before they are conscious and spend time looking for it. With that in mind, I have created a button that would attract users to land on the return policy page, with the tagline we care.

Key Insights

Summary & Future Considerations

The success of Main Street is largely driven by bringing people together, whether it be shopping in a boutique store, chilling in a cafe or taking a stroll down the street. Hence, it is important to make it as easy and friction-less as possible for users who is wishing to connect and engage with the community online.
